October Boom Room Jazz Lineup

Boom Room Event

7th: The Music of Joe Henderson

The MN Hard Bop Collective returns to the Boom Room this time to explore the music of Joe Henderson, who’s name has become synonymous with power and grace on the tenor saxophone, and has long been revered in musical circles for his distinctive sound and powers of invention. Although Henderson’s earliest recordings were marked by a strong hard-bop influence, his playing encompassed not only the bebop tradition, but rhythm and blues, latin, and avant-garde as well. Be that as it may, Joe Henderson left an indelible mark on the hard-bop jazz scene. Come hear this quintet of top notch Twin Cities professionals, Dave Brattain, Jeff Rinear, Chris Olson, Kameron Markworth and Jesse Simon revisit his timeless music while enjoying the best craft beer Minneapolis has to offer.

14th: Ron Evaniuk Trio featuring Eric Gravatt

Bassist with the Americana Classic Jazz Orchestra (devoted to the big band music of the 20s and 30s), JazzMN Orchestra, and leader of his own quartet, Ron Evaniuk recorded with Twin Cities trumpet legend Gene Adams and has played with George Avaloz, in addition to his long-standing work with Source Code. Come hear this trio of top notch Twin Cities professionals revisit this timeless music while enjoying the best craft beer Minneapolis has to offer.

21th: Vocal Sensation Sarah Greer meets Guitar Legend Dean Magraw

About Sarah Greer: I have also had the sheer pleasure as an audience member witnessing Sarah in her element as a solo artist or member of a duo, trio or quartet adding her special flare of jazz, hip hop, bebop, beatbox, wordsmithing vocalizations to the mix. In short, she rocks!!!”

About Dean Magraw: Dean Magraw’s guitar playing transcends, transports and lifts the soul to a higher level as he weaves, cajoles and entices every note from his instrument. The note, length of note, tone of note, the bending of the note; every colour of the note is explored and delivered with a master’s care and love. Just as important are the silences with which he knits his music… these can only come with being at one with one’s art. Dean Magraw is an incredible world class musician who’s modesty only makes him more appreciated by the listener.”

Come hear this dynamic duo mesmerize for an amazing evening of improvisation, spontaneity, swing and soul while enjoying the best craft beer Minneapolis has to offer.

28th: Joe Mayo Quartet featuring Clay Puhfal

Saturday Night Jazz at the Boom Room this week features the really big sounds of a two-sax quartet, Really Big Shoe. Launched earlier this year at Jazz Central, Really Big Shoe is co-led by saxophonists Joe Mayo and Clay Pufahl, with bassist Matt Peterson and drummer Joey VanPhillips rounding out the ensemble. Their repertoire is “original jazz and neat arrangements of potentially familiar tunes.”
