MINNESOTA HARD BOP COLLECTIVE/BOOM ISLAND RECEIVE JAZZ GRANT FROM MRAC

Grant to Stress Education and Revitalization of Hard Bop Jazz in the Twin Cities

(FEBRUARY 2018) The Minnesota Hard Bop Collective (MNHBC), in conjunction with Boom Room Jazz/Boom Island Brewing Company, applied for and was awarded a Community Arts Grant from the Minnesota Regional Arts Council. The grant, written by MNHBC drummer and Boom Room Jazz Artistic Director Jesse Simon, will introduce a new generation of musicians and audiences to Hard Bop jazz, a genre woefully underrepresented in today’s jazz scene. To celebrate, starting in February, Boom Room Jazz will offer free live concerts at Boom Island Brewing twice a month, at 7pm.

Each concert will showcase a diverse stable of professionals performing a rarely heard repertoire of classic hard bop jazz. Each performance, through June 2018, will feature different musicians based on the selections. The best local players will be hand picked from the Twin Cities Jazz Community, all touting advanced degrees from acclaimed universities and conservatories. Expect spirited and swinging themed performance will also engage the audience with historical anecdotes relevant to each set between songs.

Far from background music, audiences and musicians will be energized, uplifted and challenged with each performance, with all involved going home with a better understanding of the diversity of Hard Bop music. The MNHBC will begin an every other week schedule in February, at 7pm, with the following dates:

Saturday, February 10 – "Soul Station" Quartet The music of Hank Mobley part 3
