In the late 1970's Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers were doing business as usual but with the help of a bright new young lion: Bobby Watson. Besides his virtuous abilities on Alto Saxophone, Watson's compositions were reflective of the early hard bop movement of the
1950s and 1960s, but with a slight "modern" edge. Even though Wynton Marsalis is branded as being the original "young lion", it was Bobby's
vivacious energy and compositional nature that set the path for that movement. After his tenure as Music Director for the Jazz Messengers,
Watson went off to form the band "Horizon", which was very fitting for the new and exciting music they produced. The MNHBC will explore both
the music of Watson's compositions of the late Jazz Messengers and his compositions from Horizon.
